B.S. Candidate

Ryan Treves

B.S. Candidate, Earth Systems

Ryan Treves is a junior majoring in Earth Systems. He is interested in environmental
policy and data science and analysis, and how research may contribute to more empirical policy and decision-making.

Initially at Stanford, Ryan was immersed in chemistry and biology, but after engaging with social and environmental activism on campus, he began to shift his focus to tough questions surrounding climate change and community resilience. This resulted not only in his undergraduate major choice, but also the development of his undergraduate honors research on Community Clean Air Shelters for wildfire smoke. Ryan plans to interview community members and local officials in order to model how people decide to use these shelters, and understand how to expand access for vulnerable populations in the  face of worsening wildfire seasons.

“What makes me most excited are win-win solutions. When we can come up tools and policies that can improve people’s resilience to environmental hazards like wildfires, and also protect the ecosystems, like California’s forests, that we depend on...those kinds of things give me energy.”

Outside of his academic work, Ryan enjoys playing soccer and violin, birdwatching, and co-leading Students for a Sustainable Stanford.
