PhD Candidate

Bianca Santos

Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER)

Bianca Santos is a PhD Candidate in the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources program. She is a marine biologist interested in mitigating human interactions with marine protected species. Her interests have led to projects on fisher management, sea turtle mortality, and other components of how the marine and human world interact.

Bianca’s academic interests have broadened through experiences in international marine policy and communication opportunities. She became more interested in the problem solving and decision making aspects of marine sciences, and wants to be at the interface where change is happening. Her past experiences include a Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, working at the Food and Agricultural Organization within the United Nations, as well as raising public awareness about marine science in the Chesapeake Bay.

"I genuinely love the work that I'm doing, which makes me excited to do it everyday. Using the scientific method to help me be an expert in my field, as well as doing community outreach and teaching to share what I've learned with other people is just really great."

When she is not researching, Bianca loves to travel the world. Her favorite trip yet was camping through Southern African countries; including Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Bianca is also proud to be first-generation student.
